Lines and Wait Times Show Marked Increase at Brevard County COVID-19 Test Sites

BREVARD COUNTY, FL. – Residents and visitors to Brevard County COVID-19 testing sites are being asked to exercise patience as long lines and subsequent wait times – nearly two hours in some instances on Monday -- have resulted from the latest surge in COVID cases.

Within the past week, the Florida Department of Health has reported a nearly quadruple spike in the number of positive COVID-19 tests in Brevard County, from 50 per 100,000 the previous week, to 199 per 100,000 as of the latest update from FDOH this past Friday, Dec. 24. Those increasing numbers have prompted an increase in the demand for testing. The number of people waiting at the four Brevard County Emergency Management-supported test sites on Monday were significantly longer than the previous week. What’s being seen in Brevard County mirrors the spike experienced statewide in the number of COVID-19 cases. Brevard County is currently classified as a community of high transmission of the virus.

Recommendations to protect yourself from becoming infected by COVID-19 have changed little since the pandemic first began in 2020: Wash your hands frequently, social distance, wear facial coverings, stay home if you’re sick, and get vaccinated or, if you have been vaccinated, follow through by getting a booster shot.

Local testing is keeping up with demand, but people are experiencing longer wait times.
