Moderna & Pfizer vaccines—how do they work?
It's important to know that scientists had a head start making these COVID- 19 vaccines.
Scientists at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Pennsylvania started working on these vaccines after previous coronavirus outbreaks.
They isolated one part of the virus—the spike. This would help them make the vaccines.
These COVID-19 vaccines are mRNA vaccines. Basically, they're instructions for bodies to make examples Of COVID-19 spikes.
Here's How the Vaccine Works In Your Body
After the vaccine, your body will build spike examples.
Your immune system will recognize the spikes as new and unusual.
Your immune system will attack the spikes.
While your immune system attacks, your body will remember what the spikes look like.
The Second Shot Helps the Vaccine Become Even More Effective.
Without vaccine, your immune system won't be fast enough to recognize that the COVID-19 virus is bad. While your immune system desperately works to protect your body, the virus has plenty of time to spread and make you sick.
With vaccine, your body already knows to be on the lookout for the spike. If the virus enters your body, your immune system quickly gets to work destroying the virus.
You won't get sick when your body builds spike examples because the spikes aren't virus. The vaccine does NOT involve injecting you with the COVlD-19 virus and it does NOT change your DNA or your genetic code.
After vaccine, you might have some side effects—they will go away in a few days. Side effects are normal signs your body is building protection. Side effects include:
- Pain and swelling on the arm with the shot.
- Fever, chills, tiredness and headache.

Florida COVID -19 Vaccine Priorities
(Revised 3/26, effective 4/5 per Executive Order 21-79)
Persons over 18 years of age
* All vaccines are approved for this age group
Persons 16 –17 years of age
* Requires parental or legal guardian consent
* Pfizer is the only FDA vaccine approved for this age group
Vaccine Operation Highlights
Florida Department of Health in Brevard, and the partners they support, have provided 75,038 vaccines since January 4, 2021
Effective, Monday April 5, Executive Order 21-79 expanded minimum age of those eligible to now include individuals 16 years and older
- Pfizer is the only vaccine approved by the FDA for those 16 to 17 years old and requires parental or legal guardian consent to be administered
- At this time there are no COVID-19 vaccines approved for anyone under the age of 16
Per the Florida Department of Health, the total number of residents vaccinated in Brevard County is 179,513
- 75,735 have received at least one dose
- 68% of over the age of 65
- 52 % of over the age of 50
- 103,778 have completed the full series
Emergency Management partnered with the City of Melbourne to host one of the State’s Mobile Vaccine Vans at Lipscomb Park, where 390 doses were administered to the surrounding community on a walk-up basis
As part of the Governor’s partnership with faith based groups to reach underserved communities, a vaccination event was held with the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Titusville, administering vaccine to just under 600 people
The Florida Division of Emergency Management has launched a contact email for homebound seniors to register for the COVID-19 vaccine to be brought directly to them

- Testing available for adults and children of all ages
- Rapid antigen tests with results in as soon as 15 minutes now available
- Insurance information will be requested but is not required to receive a test
- There will be no copay or any fee charged
- Identification is no longer required but does expedite the process

Brevard County Public Schools continue to offer meals for all children up to 18 years old at various food distribution sites.

Brevard County Updates
Brevard County Government has a limited amount of funds to assist families who have lost a loved one due to Coronavirus.
The application for the program is available at the Community Action Agency (Dr. Joe Lee Smith Community Center, 415 Stone Street, Cocoa, FL 32922), or via Brevard County’s Housing and Human Services website
Eligibility requirements include:
- Cause of death on the death certificate must be directly or indirectly related to Coronavirus (COVID-19)
- Example of indirect –heart attack (main) exacerbated by coronavirus
- Brevard resident
- Household income must be below 150% of poverty ($39,300 for a family of 4)
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program provides financial assistance and housing stability services for those impacted by COVID-19
Eligibility requirements include:
- Applicant is a resident of Brevard County.
- Applicant is at or below 80% of Area Median Income.
- The applicant must sign all required documents or their application will be rejected/denied.
- Documentation of all income from the entire Household as reported on the Household Income Section of the application (include 2 months of bank statements, pay stubs, etc., or a 2020 tax return (IRS Form 1040)).
- All members of a household must be accounted for in the application.
- For applications filled out by hand, please make sure that the writing is clear and legible.
State and National Updates
Governor’s DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-81 prohibiting COVID-19 Vaccine Passports. Per EO 20-81:
- Florida businesses are prohibited from requiring proof of vaccination for patrons or customers
- No Florida government entity can issue vaccine passports or passes to certify proof of vaccine
Each of the four federally-supported vaccine sites (Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and Miami) are distributing 3,000 doses per day of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, no appointments are required
The CDC updated its travel guidance for fully vaccinated individuals within the United States. Per the guidance:
- COVID-19 testing or post-travel self-quarantine is no longer required
- Travelers must continue to take COVID-19 precautions: wear a mask, avoid crowds, social distancing, and wash hands frequently
- Individuals are considered fully vaccinated
- 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Modernavaccines
- 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine
The CDC published technical instructions for the next phase of the Conditional Sailing Order requiring cruise lines to establish agreements at ports, implement routine testing of crew, and develop plans incorporating strategies to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19
